MCOBA Newsletter March Issue 3 | Page 2

A Word…….continued Well done to the Lads and Lass‘s from way down under in New Zealand!!! A gathering took place somewhere in the land of the long white cloud and I know there would have been lots of College debate on the go. Note I did say Lass‘s, yes the ladies were also flying the College flag with their good College men. Thanks needs to go out to the Old Boys branches who made contributions towards the installation of the new electronic scoreboard on Goldstones. Zululand, Harding, Midlands, Tugela and Maritzburg, together with the MCOBA made this project possible. The scoreboard was baptised with a great win over Northwood (31—6)in the first game of the season on Friday 21st March. Well done 1st XV on a great start to the 2014 campaign. The 1st XV will be at the St Stithians Easter Festival over the weekend of 19/20 April. Thereafter they go off to Kimberly for the Wildeklawer festival on 2730 April. They will travel with the U14/15 & 16A teams. Please check your diaries and make yourselves available to attend the AGM on the 19 April. I encourage you to attend if you can and make a contribution by just being involved and having a say. I know that the out of town guys are too far away, so you are all excused…hopefully our monthly newsletter is keeping you in the loop with all things College and Old Boys. Letters to the MCOBA Thank you for the interesting Newsletter. I have been downloading (& printing out!) all the regular school news-letters which Rob reads with gusto, so well done on a specific ‗Old Boys‘ one. Attached is a photo of the recent get-together we had over here. Regards from Con Sharratt – New Zealand Seven Maritzburg College Old Boys gathered at the Mairangi Bay, Auckland home of Henry and Nadeen Harbuz on Sunday, 9th March 2014. Although few in number, and each having attended College at different times, the common denominator of shared College experiences contributed to a convivial and relaxed social gathering. The College wives who accompanied their husbands, thoroughly enjoyed meeting one another again and catching up on family and friends‘ news. Sadly, for many different reasons, the turn-out was lower than expected, as a great number of Old Boys living in New Zealand, reside in the Auckland region. The Gauteng branch have a golf day and dinner on Left to right:- Henry Harbuz (1970);Don Urquhart the 9 May, so we look forward to seeing as many of (1966); Miles English (1966); Rob Sharratt (1955); Chris you at the golf and dinner on that day. KEVIN TRODD Seen at the 2013 Gauteng branch function: Barry Noel (1967, Vivek Ramsaroop (2007), Kelvin Watt (1987) Congratulations to the 2014 basketball First Team on their recent success at the National Schools Invitation Basketball Tournament. It is very pleasing to see the tradition of College being a leading South African basketball school being upheld. Going back into the distant past to the days of the introduction of basketball at College under the coaching of Val Ashworth (an Old Boy), to the practice court that sat across a driveway exit, to a purpose built court at the top corner of Barnes, to the move to the Tech Courts next to the 'Dusi and now to the posh courts next to the squash courts, basketball has had a long journey and a proud history. Congratulations, once again and keep "making hoops". Llew Dodd—Coach (1984 to 1997)
