claim to be and act one way, but are totally the opposite. Hill tells these women that “respect is just a minimum” and how they deserve much more than how unworthy men treats them. She say’s “don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem.” She is telling women that they are more valuable than what they think. Hill tells black women to love their black beauty, to not think that Caucasian hair is the best type of hair and to not install fake nails and weaves thinking that this is what it is to be beautiful. She is telling these women to “come again;” to find beauty within and outwardly
in their skin, hair and nails because it is beautiful. She want’s women to become conscious and aware of this truth. The first chorus of the song is a warning to men about these types of women who are ignorant to the truth. She said you better watch out because some girls are only about that thing which is money. They are not there to find a man’s heart but instead there to see what they can gain.
Lauryn Hill was not going to let the men slide. The second verse is definitely dedicated to the men, “more concerned with his rims and his Tims then his women.” Hill is starting the second verse with men who are more focused on their materialistic objects rather than building a foundation and a healthy relationship with their woman. She exposes the hypocrisies of men who seem to have to on cowboy’s hat, but owns no cattle. “Him and his men come in the club like hooligans don’t care who they offend popping yang like they got yen.” These types of men are all talk but do not have anything to show for it. Hill talks about men who appear to live lavish drinking Cristal, which is a popular, pricy champagne, but still lives at home with their mother in her basement. Men, who take money from women, do not take care of their children, domestically abuse women, quick to get a girl pregnant but have not fully developed the maturity of what it is to be a man and take care of responsibilities. This causes heartbreak and resentment with women. She is telling men to come again wake up and mature within the mind and to see that they are more than what they let out.
Lauryn Hill warns women in the second chorus, telling them to beware these types of men; the ones who are especially are after “That thing” which is sex. She is telling men and women to wake up and stop falling slave to these trends and stereotypes which causes them to self-destruct. She is telling them to come again and think differently and to and to see themselves as the kings and queens they really are. Hill helped change the world by helping people to change their minds through her music.
