McDermott is a Good Corporate Citizen Underlying McDermott’s commitment to the environment is the desire to return to any theater and be welcomed back by the clients. Increasingly that means having a good environmental reputation with governments, regulators and the local communities. As a company, McDermott is committed to ISO 26000, which is an International Standard giving guidance and recommendations about how any organization can improve its Social Responsibility and thus contribute to sustainable environmental, social and economic development. McDermott is proud of its work in the local communities and considers itself a socially responsible company that is committed to developing and improving the quality of life in the communities its employees live and work, and society at large. For example, McDermott’s Batam International Charity (BIC), established in 2002, provides assistance in the local community of Batam, Indonesia. BIC has supported projects that provide the basic necessities, such as support to local schools, orphanages, medical support to the less fortunate and disaster relief. McDermott supports many non-profit organizations including the Dubai Center for Special Needs (DCSN) in the United Arab Emirates. McDermott has raised more than $630,000 for the DCSN to support specialized education and therapy for children with various disabilities. McDermott Houston employees and contractors came far and wide to participate in the annual 5K Houston Heart Walk held on November 5, 2016, raising nearly $100,000 and was one of the top five companies in terms of contributions. The Houston Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s premiere event for raising funds to save lives from the United States No. 1 and No. 5 killers - heart disease and stroke. Vaseem Khan, McDermott Vice President of Engineering, is a big proponent of catching and developing engineers early. As part of McDermott’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, McDermott’s involvement in science fairs as a way of “hooking” engineers early. As part of National Engineers Week, McDermott was a key sponsor of the regional Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH) held at the University of Houston February 24-25, 2017, which drew about 1,200 students. “We have started a young engineers forum for those under the age of 35. Our young engineers are renowned for their ideas and we need to bring those ideas to the forefront. We want to turn McDermott into a digital engineering company and we believe our youth have a great role to play in that. These are the people who have grown up with smart phones and iPads and they are very comfortable with technology,” Khan said.
