STUDENT STORY
Morten Fausboell
Danish
Class of 2019
How does culture influence your work as a
stand-up comedian?
You must have great respect for the country you
are performing in. In the case of China, where I’m
currently taking electives while performing, there
are certain topics you want to avoid so as not to
alienate the Chinese crowd—or have your comedy
club shut down.
Are there any traits that all cultures share?
People generally laugh at the same things. There’s
not that big a difference between people when it
comes to humor, I find. You can’t tell where the
person is from as you hear them laugh, but you
know what they’re saying.
We all laugh
in the same
language
How has starting Hult’s Stand-Up Comedy Club
enhanced your learning experience?
Many of the people getting on stage for our first
show had joined the club to challenge their fear of
public speaking. Now they know that they can go
on any stage and present anything. These students
pushed themselves out of their comfort zone in
order to develop themselves. That is a growth
mindset if I ever saw it. You can skydive or bungee
jump, but in both cases you have a parachute or a
rope; there are no safety nets on a comedy stage.
These students went up regardless.
