Parkland Community Garden

new arrivals

Increase the number of people with healthier eating opportunities.

Increase the number of people with expanded access to healthy fruit and vegetables via urban and community gardens.

To promote healthy eating in Louisville Metro, three of our community partners have worked together to open Parkland Community Garden. As a result of efforts from Louisville Metro Economic Growth & Innovation, the University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and Management, and the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service, and help from community members, Parkland Community Build Day took place on April 13, 2013, at 28th and Dumesnil. Raised beds were installed and filled with soil, and the area was mulched.

To promote the garden and enhance community knowledge and familiarity regarding urban agriculture, two community-wide meetings were held. Topics included simple but important practices for keeping gardens safe and healthy, resources available to support safe urban gardens in the community, and safe soil and soil testing. Finally, four new safe gardening resource documents were made available to the public in English, Arabic, Nepali, Somali, Spanish, and Swahili.
