Spirits thought and planned for him.
Zotz had said, “Back in the deep, black shadows two Maya Spirits talked and were
amazed at your mortal strength, Guillermo.”
One Spirit had asked to the other, “Should we make one more attempt to kill him?”
“No!” The quick reply came back. “Something tells me, this man will surely return
one day to claim his treasure, and we will wait. For their time means nothing to us.”
At the rancho, the family took him in and nursed him back to health. When he was
strong enough, Guillermo paid the family the last of his money, looked once more for a
long time at the jungle, then slowly turned around, and returned to Oaxaca City.
Fearing for his freedom, the safety of his family, Guillermo refused to report
