Balboa spends his time in meat lockers hacking away at someone’s dinner, while Drago is busy hitting various force- measuring punching bags. Rocky is dragging old telephone poles and chopping down trees while Drago trains under the supervision of scientists, every move aimed at mimicking the sport of boxing. The difference? GPP vs SPP- Rocky’s training is aimed building a general athletic foundation while Drago’s is aimed at building sport specific (boxing) moves. The great debate of GPP vs SPP. GPP (General Physical Preparedness) is the groundwork, the nuts and bolts of any great athlete. SPP (Specific Physical Preparedness) is the sport-specific training that has been distorted over the years. A strength and conditioning coach should prioritize GPP with every athlete and leave the sport specific training to PRACTICE.
