Melbourne was even more vibrant than usual in late March and April with the amazing annual Flower & Garden Show and the celebrated Melbourne Comedy Festival. It was heartening to see visitors walking about the city with their green buckets filled with bulbs and other gardening goodies and plants, ready to brighten suburban landscapes. It was also fun to join the long lines of eager festival-goers waiting to see their favourite comedians. Sydneysiders were treated to an entertaining Easter Show again this year with prize livestock, daring equestrian events, and all the fun of the fair with hair-raising rides, carnival games, and of course lots of show bags to choose from.
Now that we are experiencing some beautiful autumn, it’ s time to make the most of the sunshine. Find your own comfy, warm spot and enjoy a good read. This month there is some remarkable fiction from our favourite authors. From Elizabeth Strout comes The Things We Never Say, the story of Artie Dam, who is plagued by feelings of isolation and is forced to reassess the value of his relationships. Amanda Lohrey brings us Capture, a‘ strange philosophical fable about what we can believe in a post-truth world’ and Douglas Stuart, winner of the 2020 Booker Prize for Shuggie Bain, returns with another stunning but heartbreaking tale set on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Dervla McTiernan has a new spine-chilling mystery, Three Reasons for Revenge, and well-known children’ s author Rebecca Lim delves into the world of crime with the thriller The Graduate.
Lena Dunham shares her story in Famesick, and Stan Grant expresses his concerns about our inability to talk to each other in When Words Fail Us. Nutritionist Melanie Lionello presents a recipe for you to try from her new cookbook, and Rick Stein joins with his ex-wife Jill to offer another collection of delicious dishes.
Mandy from Balmain recommends two fantastic new children’ s books, Raised by Wolves by Tristan Bancks and Bunns Rabbit by Alan Barillaro, as well as a picture book, The Umbrella by Niki Foreman and Binny Talib.
As always, our team has made some wonderful suggestions to add to your bedside collection. Enjoy autumn and Happy Reading!
