Bringing a New Steinway Model D to the Meyerhoff
The world’ s finest musicians demand the world’ s finest piano. This year, Steinway & Sons is helping the BSO bring home an incredible new concert grand piano to match the caliber of artists presented at the Meyerhoff. A Steinway Model D is one of the largest concert grand pianos available, measuring 8 feet 11 ¾ inches. Every instrument is crafted using both cutting edge and old-world techniques, a process that spans more than a year and includes over 12,000 individual components. From the bending of the continuous rim to the precise crowning of the soundboard, and meticulous regulation and voicing of the action, every step reflects a singular commitment to tonal excellence, durability, and artistic responsiveness.
Steinway & Sons was founded in New York City in 1853 by German immigrant Henry E. Steinway and his sons, who essentially laid the foundation for modern piano building. Today ' s integration of old-world building methods with state-of-the-art technology have resulted in a Steinway with the widest range of tonal colors and the most responsive touch of any instrument Steinway has ever built.
