Out the door . . . 9,999 more steps to take . Like many , you ’ ve turned your pedometer on to a daily goal of 10,000 steps , the “ magic ” number .

A recent Harvard study found that just 4,400 steps per day reduced the risk of premature mortality in women by a whopping 41 %. That ’ s 5,600 , or 56 %, less steps than we ’ ve been led to believe by advertisements and health professionals everywhere , which promote the idea that we should be taking 10,000 steps each day to see any significant health benefit .
In a recent interview , the study lead — Dr . I-Min Lee — offered some insights . Dr . Lee is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School , and her primary area of interest is the role of physical activity for preventing chronic diseases and enhancing longevity .
