Simple swaps can make your home feel warm and snug all season long.

ustralian homes are built for sunshine – open, airy and designed to let the outside in. But when winter hits, those same spaces can start to feel a little … cold. Luckily, making your home feel cosy for winter doesn’ t have to mean a milliondollar reno. In fact, a few small styling tweaks are all that’ s needed to create a space that feels warm, inviting and snug.

It’ s a concept captured by the Danish idea of hygge – a sense of cosy comfort that comes with being snug as a bug. But as Gina Beschorner, interior designer and creator of award-winning interiors blog Style Curator( stylecurator. com. au), explains, it’ s actually about how your space makes you feel. cosy

“ Despite popular use, hygge isn’ t about copying a Scandinavian interior,” she says.“ It’ s about creating a feeling of comfort and contentment.”
Seasonal style swaps
When it comes to shifting your home from summer mode to winter, texture is everything.“ Think chunky knitted throws, sheepskins, velvet bedding and quilted cushions,” says Gina.“ These rich, tactile materials add warmth both practically and visually.”
Katherine David, founder of KDI Interiors(@ kdi _ interiors. sydney), agrees.“ A nice textured area rug in the lounge area, paired with a large soft throw blanket and some feature throw cushions on your lounge will instantly make the space feel warm and snug for winter nights in.”
Textile choices can also make a big difference.“ I like to swap out lighter linens and cottons for heavier, more luxurious fabrics on the sofa and bed,” says Gina, adding deeper tones, like burgundy, chocolate brown and mauve, help create an instant sense of warmth.
Interior designer and decorator Susanne Majlath, founder of InsideOutside Design( insideoutside. com. au), also highlights the use of colour to make a space cosy.“ If there is the opportunity, a beautiful, soft, warm accented colour on your walls, like warm beiges and soft caramels, can produce a calming and cosy effect,” she says.
