INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE POTATO

The humble spud is the most popular vegetable in the world, and there are around 5,000 different varieties available around the globe. It’ s a crop that has a significance beyond hot chips, and while it’ s a staple in many cultures, it also provides job opportunities and contributes to economic growth everywhere. That’ s the reason the United Nations dedicated an annual day to the terrific tuber, and to celebrate its contribution to food security, nutrition and livelihoods. While you likely often add potatoes to your plate, it’ s a great time to try something new – potatoes feature in Indian curries, dumplings from Belarus, Finnish soups, Ethiopian stir-fries plus plenty more. NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR WEEK
8 – 14 June
One blood donation can save up to three lives, which is one of the many reasons this small act makes a big difference. During National Blood Donor Week, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood celebrates the generosity of those who have given the gift of life. In 2025, 600,123 people donated blood, plasma or platelets, and these donations are critical for patients of all ages – in fact, one in three people need blood or blood products during their life. This year, Lifeblood needs more than 110,000 new donors to meet the increasing demand in the community, so if you’ ve never had a go or it’ s been a while, head to lifeblood. com. au to book an appointment to donate.
WORLD GIN DAY

While this spirit is now often enjoyed with tonic, when gin was first invented almost a thousand years ago, it was considered a tonic itself, with the juniper-infused drink being used to treat stomach ailments and ward off the plague. Thankfully, it now has tastier uses in martinis, negronis and classic G & Ts. World Gin Day, on the second Saturday in June each year, is a time to celebrate this classic spirit.
