SPECIAL SECTION: OUTDOOR & GARDEN
With the current cost of real estate, many of us are moving into townhouses or apartments with only small courtyards or balconies to grow on. And new estates so often include large homes on small blocks, leaving very little ground for gardening.
Thankfully, these size limitations don’ t have to stop people from gardening if they know how to adapt. Small-space gardening guru Breanna Parker from Tiny Garden Growing( tinygardengrowing. com) has seen demand for her design and support services skyrocket in recent months. Parker’ s own tiny garden surrounds her home on a 400-square-metre block of land.
“ I use vertical spaces, raised planters, large pots and carefully selected varieties to successfully grow on a very small footprint,” she says, adding that being mindful of sunlight is particularly important for small-space gardeners.“ Observe the sun throughout the day and consider seasonality [ when you’ re choosing what to plant where ].”

In line with our passion for more naturalistic style gardens, Aussies are requesting and using more curves in their garden designs, moving away from the rigid lines of the’ 50s and’ 60s.“ Clients are requesting sawn rock stairs, round pools and large rocks in place of straight timber retaining walls,” says Liam Riley from ID Landscaping( idlandscaping. com. au).“ We’ ve not done a straight path in a while now. The more informal yet detailed crazy paving is much preferred over straight and angular brick paths.”
Incorporate this trend into your yard by creating circular seating that mirrors the curves of your fire pit. And it doesn’ t have to be an expensive custom job; feel free to use found materials from your garden, such as rocks and logs.
