one are the days of the typical Australian garden including“ gum trees, lots of plum trees … and a clothesline out the back.” Since the’ 80s and’ 90s, the ideal Australian garden has evolved. Sorry, John Williamson, but the‘ Home among the gumtrees’ that you sang about in the’ 80s isn’ t what every Australian wants( or can afford) these days! Back then the typical Aussie garden included a big lawn for backyard cricket, a Hills Hoist clothesline, a lemon tree and a concreted barbecue space.
Today, our gardens are getting smaller and, instead of large expanses of lawn, we want outdoor living spaces, natural pools, edible garden beds, pollinator patches and waterwise, low-maintenance plants.
