If you’ re searching for a low-maintenance lawn alternative, high-quality synthetic turf is a smart and stylish solution. BY AIDAN MEHARG

nce only seen on sports fields, synthetic turf is fast becoming an increasingly popular choice for Australian and New Zealand homeowners – and for multiple reasons. Not only does synthetic grass reduce water usage, allergies, dust, insects and weeds, but it’ s also highly durable – perfect for families with pets and small children – and requires significantly less upkeep. Best of all, with proper maintenance, synthetic turf will always look lush and green, even in problematic areas, such as shaded pathways, edges and corners, under outdoor play equipment and in small courtyards.
“ Increased awareness of water usage, coupled with busy lifestyles, has made artificial turf an attractive proposition for many Australians,” explains Costco buyer Jesslyn Huynh.“ It’ s a great option for smaller-sized lots that don’ t have space for lawn-cutting equipment or just for people who don’ t have the time or capacity to maintain a natural grass lawn.”
Different types of turf
When shopping for artificial turf, traffic, durability, aesthetics and suitability for pets and children are top considerations. Peter Ellis, general manager of sales and marketing at Costco supplier Urban Turf Solutions, says that’ s where investing in a high-quality product can help.
“ At the end of the day, you get what you pay for,” Ellis says.“ There are a lot of products in the Australian market that may not be designed for our conditions.”
According to Ellis, UV protection is the first thing members should look for in a synthetic turf.“ Without adequate protection, synthetic grass will fail – that’ s a problem with a lot of imported products,” he says.“ All Urban Turf Solutions products are designed and made in Australia to the highest possible standard – and are UV-stabilised to withstand the harsh Australian sun.”
The length or pile height of your artificial grass is another important factor. Shorter piles work well for sports zones, such as cricket pitches or putting areas. For these applications, the Urban Leisure series, available in a 9-millimetre pile height, is a smart choice.
For those seeking a lush, real-lawn look, items with a greater pile height are ideal.
