7. Be careful with chemicals
Using garden chemicals sustainably can be tricky. Many common garden chemicals can have serious impacts on animals, insects, soil and water in your garden. Using good gardening practices( such as watering in the mornings and removing any infected leaves and fruit) as well as using products containing safer ingredients can be very effective. Tools like Sustainable Gardening Australia’ s WiseGardening database, which assesses the impact of garden chemical products, can tell you the safest ways to treat common plant pests and diseases in your garden.
8. It takes a village
There’ s no doubt that gardening more sustainably provides great benefits to the environment, but for me, my favourite benefit is community. Once you start thinking about the way you garden, you’ ll find yourself becoming part of an amazing community of people who are passionate about learning and sharing knowledge. Family, friends, flatmates, neighbours, the more the merrier! Locally you’ ll also find Community Gardens, food swaps and even council and library presentations that are great opportunities to learn, share and grow sustainably.
Sustainable gardening is smarter gardening. And by starting with just a few small changes you really can make a difference.
