SPECIAL SECTION: OUTDOOR & GARDEN
4. Perfect plants
The right plant in the right spot is one of the real secrets to a successful – and sustainable – garden. Plants that are matched to the conditions in your garden are happier and healthier, and usually need less watering, feeding and maintaining. They can also provide extra benefits such as habitat for local wildlife, food for your family or even lovely shade for a barbecue on a hot day. Visit your local nursery or garden centre to chat with a horticulturist about the best plant choices for your garden.

5. Grow your own
Concerns about the cost of living and food security have contributed to a huge resurgence in growing your own produce. COVID lockdowns also gave many families the chance to try producing their own food at home.( Sourdough, anyone?!) From herbs in pots on balconies, to raised veggie garden beds and fruit trees, gardeners are producing beautiful bounties. But if you’ re just beginning, don’ t worry. There are plenty of simple options to start with. Try a few of your favourite herbs together in a big pot or pop in some lowmaintenance veg like mixed lettuce and snow peas for a delicious start. You’ ll be growing healthy, fresh food that also tastes great in no time!

6. The magic of mulch
Mulching your garden equals less watering, less weeding and helps to improve your soil. Win, win, and … win! You can mulch both garden beds and pots, and there are lots of different types of mulches available including straw, lucerne, sugar cane, composted bark and even pebbles.
Mulch can also provide a great habitat for small visitors to your garden such as insects, lizards and birds.
