SPECIAL SECTION: OUTDOOR & GARDEN
1. Second chances
Using recycled materials in the garden is a fun way to garden more sustainably. Get creative and repurpose items to keep them out of landfill. From second-hand concrete pavers and timber sleepers, to turning old boots or kitchen crockery into planters, there are no limits to the fun and creative ways you can recycle and turn something old into something new again.

2. Create a wildlife haven
With increases in population and housing density, some of our local wildlife is feeling the pinch. It’ s easy to provide your local fauna with a little help while you get to enjoy the benefit of extra visitors to your garden. Dishes and bowls of fresh water can provide reprieve on a hot day for birds and insects, and insect hotels and nesting boxes can encourage new visitors to settle in your backyard. Choosing plants that provide nectar, fruit or even shelter can also help to encourage some of the smaller birds that are losing their habitats, into your garden.
3. A good base for success

Healthy plants depend on a good growing medium. After all, it’ s where they get most of their nutrients and water. When preparing your garden for planting, add compost to increase nutrients and improve water retention to encourage a healthy, living soil. When planting in pots, use the best quality potting mix you can. Good soil and potting mix really are fundamental for producing strong and healthy plants. Plants then require less watering, less fertiliser and have fewer pest and disease problems. >
