Heart and Sole Takes Positive Strides

Students at the Jersey Shore Middle School are taking full advantage of the spring weather. Heart & Sole program is a transformative initiative designed by Girls on the Run, specifically for middle school girls in grades 6 through 8. This program emphasizes the development of the whole girl- body, brain, heart, spirit, and social connections- through a combination of interactive lessons and physical activity.
Students, along with volunteer coaches, engage in a 10-week curriculum that meets twice a week, focusing on building life skills, such as goal setting, decision making, empathy, and resilience. The program culminates in a celebratory 5K event by providing participants gratification and pride for accomplishing the training and goal setting throughout the program.
Thirteen girls from Jersey Shore Middle School have taken the plunge to commit to training for a 5K on April 26th in Lewisburg. Girls across all three grade levels meet twice a week after school. The girls have engaged in a series of lessons and activities to work through typical middle school topics such as self-acceptance, peer relationships, empowerment, and conflict resolution. Following the lesson, girls engage in team building lessons, building endurance, and run, walk, or jog the 3.1 mile course at the end of the month.
Participants have reported that they have enjoyed spending time with their friends, while also getting exercise and enjoying the spring weather. One participant, Piper Green, shared,“ I feel more confident and that I can think about ways to solve problems.” Girls have shared that they enjoy the team building activities and are looking forward to practices. The Heart and Sole coaches strive to continue to break down barriers so that every girl- regardless of background or ability- can have access to a life-changing experience that builds confidence for girls to feel empowered!
