SHARK TANK IN THE 4TH GRADE CLASSROOM
The television show, Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs seek investments for their creative innovations, has captured the attention of millions of viewers. Based on the person ' s pitch, creativity, and marketing plan, the“ sharks,” or wealthy investors, get to decide if the idea is worth their money and time to invest in the company. Mrs. Mayes, 4th grade teacher, found a way to use the idea of Shark Tank in the classroom to help teach entrepreneurship in a fun way.
The students worked in teams to come up with an idea or product, market it, financially plan it, and present it to the“ Sharks,” which was a panel of adults throughout the school. Teams had a folder of worksheets and graphic organizers to help them through each step of the process. They had to research what the materials, labor, and workspace cost for making their product. Then they decide what price to sell the product for to calculate profit. They had to create a prototype and a marketing plan, then present their information to a panel of Sharks.
Some of the ideas that the teams presented were:
• A phone case that lights up and makes a noise when you clap so you can find it.
• A water bottle with powder in it, that when mixed with water it becomes medication( antibiotics).
• An unbreakable doll.
• A sneaker that makes you run faster and jump higher.
• Glasses that can see through anything.
The Sharks, which were mostly made up of school administrators, said that the students did a wonderful job with the entire process.“ They really embraced the experience and enjoyed presenting their hard work. We look forward to seeing the project grow in the future.”
