Ask Greta

Dear Greta, Recently, my brother asked my mother to cosign on a loan to buy equipment. A short period of time later, he was laid off and could not find work in his field. My mother has since had to take over the payments or otherwise damage her perfect credit. My brother has now found a job, but tells my mom he can ' t begin payments on the loan. In the meantime, he has taken out another loan, as well as purchased an expensive entertainment system and other smaller, miscellaneous items with money my mother thinks he doesn ' t have. Although he told her about the loan, she has no way of knowing about anything else he ' s doing because she lives out of town. What makes it worse is he does not appreciate her in the least and often says negative things about her. My mother does not have a lot of money for herself and has been very generous. I don ' t think she should be treated like this. Should I tell her about what my brother is doing?
- Irritated Sister
Dear Irritated:
First, I think you should confront your brother about his actions. Give him a chance to straighten this out. If he doesn ' t, you have every right to tell your mother he is using her financially. She can possibly contact the loan company or bank and see if she could transfer the debt into his name alone. Be there to help or support her with this, but whatever you do, don ' t tell her about the negative things he says. There ' s no reason to hurt her with that. There ' s an important lesson in this for people that loan money to family or friends- be sure to have an agreement in writing about how the loan will be repaid and be firm about making them stick to it! This could avoid a lot of resentment down the road.
