" Our story is not a ' traditional ' mother-daughter story , yet one that has filled a void for two people and made the dreams of the ' inner child ' inside this girl come true . Carol is not my biological mother , nor is she a blood relative at all . However , she is MY mom . She is the woman who , after learning my story , said to me , ' I will be your mom .' At the time , it seemed like just a friendly way to show her support . But we both quickly realized , our relationship and the bond we were forming , would not be that simple . My biological mother was not in my life growing up , except for the random occasion when she would decide to show up . Carol , unfortunately , lost her mother to breast cancer at a young age and courageously battled cancer multiple times herself , never having biological children of her own . That is the best part of our story . I was a grown woman with three children of my own , who was still dealing with abandonment and healthy boundary issues and wondering why I did not ' deserve ' a mom . Carol was a grown woman , happily married , who had come to terms with not having biological children . Little did we know , life had greater plans for both of us . Little by little , we would learn more about each other and discover plenty of ironic similarities . For instance , my half birthday is her birthday and vice versa . Our go-to guilty sweet treat is a sticky bun with chocolate milk . Sloppy joes should be scooped up with potato chips , and baked beans are always better when eaten cold . Carol pushes me to be the best version of myself . Not just as a person , but as a mother , wife and daughter . She supports my dreams , cheers me on , and most of all , shows up . Consistently , for the past four years , she has shown up . And , not just on the good days . She shows up on the messy and completely chaotic days too . Always offering her shoulder , her hand , a hug , encouragement , advice , and providing me with much , much grace . Not to mention , she has fully embraced her role as my children ' s Mam and treats them as her own . Forming a particularly special bond with my youngest daughter , and sharing her love for all things chocolate with my son . Our relationship has been everything I wished for , from the time I was a little girl , in a mother-daughter relationship and sooo much more . Because not only do I now call Carol ' Mama ,' I also call her my best friend . For being a little girl who did not have a present mother to being a young mother who wished so badly she ' d have a more ' traditional ' relationship with her mother , to being a grown woman who is now a daughter and has the best mama she could have asked for , I feel truly blessed . There are simply not enough ' Carols ' in this world . But , one thing is for certain , this Mother ' s Day and every day , I am forever grateful to be loved by such a brave , strong , and admirable woman , my Mama !"
