Not many people love their job , yet dream of going out of business . But that ' s exactly how Jeanne Strack feels . Jeanne founded a pet rescue called Puppies Under Protection three decades ago . She , along with five dog foster moms , went on a mission to get pregnant and nursing dogs , as well as orphan puppies , out of local shelters , initially at a rate of about 700 a year . Amazingly , over time , Jeanne and her friends have saved over 12,000 dogs ' lives ! While her rescue began when she was living in Florida , she now also has an 11 acre sanctuary in North Carolina for small senior and special needs dogs . There , they receive love , emotional and medical support , and hospice care . They take in many pets whose owners have moved into nursing homes or passed away . It ' s easy to see why she was recently named " Pet Game Changer " by Dr . Karen Becker , a veterinarian and blogger , who honors people in her online column that work diligently to promote animal welfare . Jeanne says it ' s a lot of fun , but also a lot of hard work . While she loves all animals and the work she does , her dream is to be able to close her doors because there are no more homeless animals to rescue . Says Jeanne , " We don ' t need job security - we need to go out of business ." The issue closest to her heart is educating people about the importance of spaying and neutering . " The most important thing would be , please spay and neuter animals and stop the unnecessary euthanizing of healthy , happy , loving creatures that have done nothing wrong other than to be born into a world where there ' s not enough room ." Back in 2001 , she and her husband purchased a Greyhound bus and turned it into a mobile spay and neuter clinic in West Palm Beach and were able to spay and neuter thousands of animals . That service continues to this day in Florida , and Jeanne says she ' s really proud of that .
