Environmental Science Class and Life Skills Class Living Wall Project
Recently , the Jersey Shore SH Environmental Science Class ( Mrs . Sweitzer ) and the SH Life Skills Class ( Mrs . Machmer ) joined together to complete a Trout in the Classroom extension project , using funds from the Jersey Shore Education Foundation . These funds were specifically donated by the High Real Estate Group , to be used in conjunction with Trout in the Classroom . TIC is a unique partnership between the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited ( PATU ) and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission ( PFBC ). Pennsylvania Trout In the Classroom ( PA TIC ) is an interdisciplinary environmental education program in which students learn about current and past impacts , management , and protection and enhancement opportunities of Pennsylvania ' s coldwater resources , while raising trout in the classroom .
The classes collaborated to select plants and build a living wall . The living wall is used as a model of the nitrogen cycle . Students collect waste water from their trout tanks and use in the living wall to provide essential nitrogen to the plants . The living wall is portable and travels between the two classrooms , as well as being featured in the High School Dawg Pound Coffee Shop , where all of the student body can enjoy the benefits of the plants . The living wall provided by this grant serves as both a visual model and an inspiration for future projects in agriculture . It connects the students to the living world around them one plant at a time .
