When multiple friends told her that they were struggling with their children’ s anxiety disorders, Newport-based journalist and editor Annie Sherman knew there was something deeper going on. She got to work researching and creating a guide to help parents navigate the growing crisis [“ Are the Kids All Right?”].“ They were in tears and felt truly alone. They just didn’ t know what to do. It’ s heartbreaking,” Sherman says.“ Kids and parents are going through such a traumatic health journey with pediatric anxiety, and it feels like everyone is touched by it. But there are so many resources and experts here who can help.”
Writer Michael Colbert boasts a love of books and is often assigned to the literary beat. He didn’ t hesitate to take on an assignment spotlighting an artist who creates quilts out of books.“ As a bibliophile, I’ m constantly accruing more books and overcome by guilt when I have to winnow down my collection,” he says.“ Writing about Larry Clifford’ s BiblioQuilts, I deeply admired the beauty he extracted from these books as artistic artifacts.”
Writer Lori Nassif Istok was scanning The Providence Journal one day when she learned about Pope Leo’ s first declared medical miracle, which happened right here in Rhode Island. Her family also had a personal connection to the story.“ Imagine my surprise when I realized the doctor to whom the miracle was attributed was one of our son’ s doctors in the NICU after he was born nearly seventeen weeks early,” she says.“ We always considered our son our little miracle, and now I wonder if there was some element of actual miracle involved?” Istok reflects on this connection in her First Person essay,“ Miracle Baby.”
