Ask Greta

Silly Snapshots

Dear Greta,
I have been out of work for a while and had a difficult time finding a job for various reasons. Recently, I was hired to work for a business in customer service. It ' s close to home and the hours are good, but I ' m finding it difficult dealing with how rude people can be. I don ' t want to quit, but I ' m not sure how long I can tolerate it. Any advice before I start job searching again?
- Discouraged
Dear Discouraged,
Dealing with rude people is less about changing them and more about managing your own response. Start by not taking their behavior personally. Rudeness often reflects stress, insecurity, or poor habits- not your worth. Creating that mental distance helps you to stay calm and avoid escalating the situation. Set clear boundaries when needed. A simple, steady response like,“ I’ d appreciate a more respectful tone” can signal that you won’ t accept being treated poorly. If the behavior continues, it’ s okay to disengage. Not every comment deserves a reply, and staying quiet is sometimes the most powerful choice. Practice controlled reactions. Take a breath before responding, keep your voice even, and choose words carefully. Responding with calmness can defuse tension and often prevents the situation from worsening. Finally, focus on what you can control- your attitude and reactions. Surround yourself with respectful people when possible, and don’ t dwell on negative encounters longer than necessary. Rude moments are inevitable, especially in the context of your job, but they don’ t have to define your day or your mindset.
