Following his retirement from the Palm
Beach County Circuit Court, former Circuit Judge Jim Martz has joined Schwartz Sladkus Reich Greenberg Atlas LLP( SSRGA) as a Partner attorney in the New York firm’ s Florida office in Boca Raton. Martz will lead the firm’ s Family Law Division in Florida and spearhead the launch of a new Private Judging practice area, an innovative dispute-resolution option designed to help civil litigants avoid prolonged court delays. Judge Martz brings nearly two decades of judicial experience, having served on both the criminal and civil benches, and most recently as a family law judge. During his tenure, he presided over thousands of matters involving dissolution of marriage, probate, guardianship, juvenile dependency and delinquency, mental health court proceedings, and complex civil disputes. As head of the Family Law Division, Martz will oversee litigation strategy and client advocacy while guiding the firm’ s expansion in this area. In addition, he will serve as a private judge presiding over eligible civil cases pursuant to Florida law. Florida statutes permit experienced attorneys to serve as private judges in civil, non-jury matters, provided all parties agree. Private judging allows litigants to select a neutral decision-maker, maintain control over scheduling, and receive faster resolutions— often avoiding delays that can stretch a year or more in public courts. Decisions rendered through private judging are appealable, making proper record protection critical. Martz was appointed to the bench in 2006 by then-Governor Jeb Bush and was elevated to Circuit Judge in 2010. Before his judicial appointment, he was a prosecutor in the Palm Beach County State Attorney’ s Office, where he was recognized as the single point of contact for multi-jurisdictional investigations and prosecutions.
