Engineering Term of the Month Aqueduct

An aqueduct is a man-made structure designed to move water from one place to another. Aqueducts include complex systems of pipelines, canals, tunnels, ditches, and support structures that deliver water from natural sources to communities, farms, and industries.
These systems are especially important in areas where freshwater supplies are limited or located far from population centers. By transporting water over long distances and across challenging landscapes, aqueducts help sustain cities and support agriculture.
Ancient civilizations such as those in Egypt and India developed some of the earliest aqueduct systems, but the Romans became the most recognized builders of aqueduct infrastructure in the ancient world. Roman engineers refined aqueduct design and constructed large networks throughout their empire using arches, underground tunnels, and carefully controlled slopes to maintain water flow. Several of these historic structures remain in use today, continuing to supply water to parts of Rome.
Modern aqueducts are far larger and more advanced, yet they serve the same essential purpose. California operates the most extensive aqueduct network in the United States through the California State Water Project( SWP). This enormous system includes more than 700 miles of canals, pipelines, and tunnels. At the center of the project is the 444-mile California Aqueduct, which delivers water to millions of residents and hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland. The system also features the Edmonston Pumping Plant, capable of lifting water nearly 2,000 feet over the Tehachapi Mountains— the highest water lift of its kind in the world.
