“ Renovate the Ocean State ,” March
It is amusing to read the cognitive dissonance in the pages of Rhode Island Monthly . You feature a black-tie gala , complete with a ballet performance and food prepared by a celebrity chef , all to get wealthy people to donate money for the homeless . Somehow “ black-tie gala ” and the homeless just don ’ t seem to go together . Many people donate quietly , requiring no gala to do so . Isn ’ t it time to put such fanciful soirees into the trash heap of history along with the Gilded Age ? A few pages later , you exclaim that there is a crushing demand for affordable housing while featuring very expensive renovations on very expensive homes for a “ Party Barn .” I must confess to mental whiplash ,

Thank you for printing an article about an older adult brave enough to enjoy dancing through life . I resonated with this author on many levels . We both had done many of the same things like spin , kickboxing and ice skating , but we both felt the greatest euphoria from dance — in the form of Jazzercise , Zumba or hip-hop . Ellen says dance “ demands total focus ” and that it ’ s “ pure joy .” I felt exactly the same . The best part of her well-written article is when she says : “ When I dance , I feel beautiful , powerful and in control … I feel free from the limitations of age and life ’ s great weight .” I couldn ’ t have said it any better !
