LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
The month of May is a key transition time for the golf course . We will be getting more aggressive with our horticultural practices and spray program to start the growing season off on the right foot . Now is the time to start opening things up and making key preventative chemical applications to help keep diseases and turf weeds at bay . The heat is in full effect this month and is typically one of the driest months in Florida . We are trying to manage water properly , although it just seems like you can never put enough out . We have been spraying wetting agents that help water penetrate through the surface of the turf faster . This does help with our moisture levels , but nothing beats a good old fashion thunderstorm .
As we move through the month , some of my goals are to aerate problem tees , collars , and bad spots in fairways and approaches . We will follow this up with some sand and fertilizer to try and improve these areas moving forward . With this process comes another preemergent application targeting goosegrass and crabgrass . Once we break the barrier from aerification , we must immediately get the next barrier in place , so the weeds are discouraged from development . Another goal is to keep up on some of the detail aspects of the course . We will continue to edge cart paths , prune trees , and try to improve the playability of the sand traps . My final goal is to tackle the big bunker on # 5 getting it reshaped and draining properly . This will be a week long project that we are excited to get started . It will not all happen overnight , but with a persistent program and plan , I am confident the maintenance staff will be successful .
