Now more than ever, the park district recognizes the importance of spending time outside for physical and
mental well-being. According to the newly released National Recreation and Park Association (NPRA) poll,
five out of six adults say exercising at local parks, trails, and open spaces is essential in maintaining mental
and physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you are looking for a little recreation relief, consider visiting a park to engage in some passive recreation,
like walking, hiking, running, wildlife and bird watching, bicycling, boating and more. These activities
provide a wonderful connection to the outdoors and green space, and are excellent opportunities for
physical activity.
Passive recreation is anything but passive!
It is fun, healthy and a great way to spend
quality time with your family and loved ones.
People who take part in passive recreation activities, schedule fewer doctors’ office visits, maintain lower
body fat percentages, and have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Passive recreation also helps
relive the feelings of stress, anxiety and social isolation. And that’s something we can all use right now!
