AWARD Brownie’s Marine Sales recognized for 50 plus years in business O n April 11, Governor Eric Holcomb honored 44 Indiana companies with the Governor’s Half Century or Century Award, recognizing the companies for its service to employees and community and its longevity. Brownie’s Marine Sales in Fairland was honored at the Indiana State House with the Governor’s Half Century Award for 50 plus years in business. Fourth generation Michael and Ryan Massey accepted the award on behalf of Brownies Marine from Governor Holcomb. Brownies Marine is a four-generation owned and operated boat business. They deal in new and used boats, have a full- service center and a fully stocked parts and accessories center. Hubert (Brownie) Brown and Evelyn Brown started the business in 1948 in Indianapolis. In 1966, they moved to Shelby County and incorporated, becoming Brownie’s Marine Sales. Their daughter, Margaret, and her husband, Jim, purchased the business from Evelyn after Hubert passed away. Today, there are three generations working at Brownie’s Marine Sales. Jim Massey and Margaret Massey, the second generation; Marc Massey the third generation; and Michael Massey and his wife Ashley Massey, the fourth generation. Ryan Massey is also fourth generation to the family business. Ryan is the daughter of James Christopher Massey, Margaret and Jim’s son. Chris passed away in 2007, but was a huge part of the business. Last but not least, a fifth generation Massey was born a year ago to Michael and Ashley, a son named Jax. Brownie’s Marine Sales were very honored to receive this award and look forward to reaching 100 years in business. “This award means a lot to us,” says Michael Massey. They truly appreciate everyone in the community, all their customers and the staff that has been with them so long that they have become family as well.
