“The assessments are by no means the only thing to consider when changing a career .”
ne of the most often asked questions posed to us is "what do you do for a living?" Although as the years go by it is supposed to become easy to answer, because you are already doing what you want to do for a living.
This is still a valid question though no matter how far along in your work life or career you are because circumstances may occur that make you ask yourself the same question.
Early on in your life, you may have differing ideas of what you want to do for a living but it seems that ultimatley this is a decision that encompasses your ability to examine your dreams, explore your talents and your abilitites to start you on the path of discovery of what you want to do for a living.
Once you have examined your talents and skills "how do you go about choosing an actual career?" you may ask. It seems for some it is a no-brainer decision. They have a dream and keep it all the way through childhood for those who are starting off on a career or even those who choose another career path. They just seem to be able to follow that dream
Then there are others who just seem lost and confused at the idea of deciding what they will be doing for potentially the rest of their life on a daily basis. These type of people ususally find a job, and just come in daily do what they know or what they percieve as the path of least rresistance because it does not interupt their steady flow of not really knowing. This situation works fine for them, they are just making the money they need to survive or as they say to live.
A good place to start in your search for a career path is to explore the things you like to do. So for example if you like to write, or express your ideas then a career in Journalism or Writing may be the path for you. Are you a good communicator, then speaking, or mediation may be a path that works for you.
If you are still unsure if what you like to do will be a good career path, why not look at the job market and see what is popular. You can do this by
doing a search for "best careers x year" or you can even see what are emerging career paths, or paths that will grow in importance.
If money is a pressing isssue then look at what jobs will let you enter on a high-paying job scale. Or, what job will allow you to work certain days of the week to free your time to explore
Another thing to consider when choosing a career path is what can you handle emotionally or physically. If looking at blood let's say makes you squeamish, then you know that most likely parts of the medical field although high paying may not be a good fit for you.
Exploring these areas are important because ultimately you have to be able to get up and do said career choice daily
If you dislike what you do, no matter how good the pay is, you will find it challenging to give it a fair chance of being what you want.
