Super Bowl Funds Bread Oven and Outdoor Kitchen
The Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee Legacy Fund recently funded a $ 50,000 , three-structure demonstration kitchen , which includes a storage shed , prep room , and bake house , at St . Paul ’ s Frogtown Farm . Now , the urban farm will be able to demonstrate healthy cooking recipes using ingredients grown on the site . This is particularly important as 35 per cent of neighborhood residents are under age 18 and 42 per cent live under the poverty line . “ There ’ s a lot of community use of this kitchen ,” says Dana Nelson , vice president of community partnerships for the Minnesota Super Bowl
Host Committee . The Legacy Fund aims to deliver 52 grants totaling roughly $ 4 million for healthy food and healthy activity projects by the time the Super Bowl kicks off in February .

Inner-city Program Uses Gardening Against Gun Violence
Urban GEMS ( Gardening Entrepreneurs , Motivating Sustainability ) is a program developed by an Ohio State University professor to protect kids from gun violence by teaching them how to garden . “ It ’ s a program all about providing positive youth development for young people in urban communities ,” says Dr . Deanna Wilkinson , an associate professor at the College of Education and Human Ecology . “ A lot of the youth that I ’ ve worked with have either directly experienced gun violence themselves , have lost siblings [ or ] have lost parents .” In the program , students grow vegetables indoors using tower gardens , then sell the fresh produce at local farmers ’ markets in Columbus . “ In the background , they are learning a lot of science ,” Wilkinson says . “ We ’ re reading . We ’ re writing . There is all kinds of different ways that this is actually an academic enrichment program .” One participant , 10-year old Nasir Groce , says the program is teaching him how to run a business and allows him to be around people that he loves . “ They don ’ t make fun of me ,” he says .

Mahindra Grants $ 100,000 To Six Urban Ag Non-Profits
The Mahindra Urban Agriculture Grant Program donated $ 100,000 in funding or Mahindra farm equipment to six southeast Michigan non-profits . “ The progress our urban agriculture partners are making , with assistance from Mahindra ’ s grants , is very commendable ,” says Richard Haas , Mahindra Automotive North America ( MANA ) president and CEO . “ I am amazed by the innovative ideas these groups present for funding .
