Making your greenhouse greener

Traditional methods of reducing humidity open up a greenhouse to the influences of external conditions that can negatively affect a crop . Israel ’ s DryGair , however , believes it has the solution to this problem .

DryGair takes humidity seriously .

So seriously , in fact , that the Israeli dehumidifier company hopes its products will solve the issues created by heat and ventilation — the traditional methods of reducing humidity in a greenhouse — entirely . “ If you have a good solution that you and your team believe in , you can educate the market and make it happen ,” says Yonatan Peretz , who works with DryGair in marketing and sales . Instead of relying on vents opened to the outside world , DryGair units work within a “ closed and isolated ” growing environment . They remove water from the air to keep humidity at optimal levels , all without any influence from external conditions .
By keeping the greenhouse sealed , DryGair technology enables growers to more easily maintain uniform conditions . This leads to improved energy efficiency , less pesticide use , better yields , and plenty of financial savings , Peretz says . The company ’ s first product — a dehumidifier that can manage 500-4,000 square meters worth of plants , depending on the crop — was developed in 2010 by the DryGair team in collaboration with Dr . Avraham Arbel of Isreal ’ s Agricultural Research Organization , Volcani Center . It was Dr . Arbel who first came up with the concept as part of his PhD thesis . Even before it was available , the unit piqued client interest . “ Our first customer was a grower who understood humidity problems and came to hear about our prototype ,” says Peretz .
