Minneapolis Youth Rap About Urban Agriculture
A group of Minneapolis youth are fighting against food deserts and unhealthy school lunches in their own way : with a rap and music video … both of which are damn good . “ Grow Food ,” with its 808 beats and Atlanta-style spooky bass lines , slams the rise of processed food and bad eating habits while promoting gardening , urban farming , and healthy eating . You can watch the video — which was produced by Appetite For Change , a nonprofit dedicated to using food as a means for economic and social growth , in collaboration with Beats & Rhymes , another local program that allows kids to write and produce music in a professional setting — at youtube . com / watch ? v = PqgU3co4vcI .

Few Students Aware of Ag Job Prospects
A recent survey shows only 13 per cent of high school and college students are interested in pursuing a career in the agriculture industry and only three per cent of them identify it as one of the best fields for college graduates . Only 19 per cent of the students surveyed indicated that they understood the broad array of career opportunities in agriculture . According to the USDA , 57,900 high-skilled jobs are created annually in food , agriculture , renewable natural resources , and environmental fields in the US . The survey also identified several misconceptions that contributed to the findings . For example , only 35 per cent of high school and college students believed careers in agriculture were technology-driven . However , when asked to share their interest in working in various industries , 45 per cent of respondents were “ extremely or very interested ” in a career in technology .

Detroit ‘ Agrihood ’ Adds Value to Neighborhood
When the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative ( MUFI ) acquired its first parcel of land in Detroit , it looked nothing like a farm . Five years later , it ’ s the center of an ‘ agrihood ’— a neighborhood centered around agriculture that is located firmly in a city . The central farming area contains 300 different crops , an orchard , a greenspace and a children ’ s sensory garden . However , the MUFI knows it cannot economically rely on the direct sale of its crops , so the organization has also focused on adding value to the community . The food produced is given away to roughly 2,000 households in a two-mile radius , as well as local churches and food pantries . There are plans for a community resource center , an automated rainwater cistern , and a café . Then there ’ s the value of living next to a farm . “ The point of the agrihood is you can have the farm and eat from it too ,” co-founder Tyler Gersh says . “ You can have it all .”
