Pandemic Bumps Canadian Cannabis Use
The number of Canadians who use cannabis is on the rise , and there is some evidence suggesting the COVID pandemic may be inspiring some to indulge more often . By late 2020 , according to Statistics Canada , 20 percent of Canadians reported using cannabis in the past three months ; an increase from the 14 percent of people who reported use before legalization . The study , which includes data collected in the fourth quarter of 2020 , sheds more light on consumption patterns that may be due , in part , to the pandemic . In March , a separate NCS survey revealed 34 percent of cannabis users increased their consumption during the pandemic , citing stress , boredom , loneliness , and ease of access as reasons for indulging more frequently . More Canadians started growing their own cannabis in 2020 , for example , with 14 percent of users opting for a homegrown source , compared to just eight and nine per cent in 2018 and 2019 , respectively .

NFL Explores Cannabis as Pain Treatment
The National Football League and NFL Players Association are investigating the potential of cannabis and its components like CBD as alternative treatment options for pain . They ’ re also more generally interested in discovering how cannabis use affects athletic performance . The league published request for information stating it wants “ to identify investigators who have the current capability to carry out studies aimed at supplementing the NFL-NFLPA Pain Management Committee ’ s ( PMC ) knowledge about pain management and athletic performance in NFL players .” The NFL is interested in three things : the therapeutic role of alternatives to opioids in routine pain management of players ; the impact of cannabis or cannabinoids on athletic performance of NFL players ; and the potential therapeutic role of medications that would help in post-surgical orthopedic pain management for players . Meanwhile , the league ’ s drug testing policy changed demonstrably last year . Under the new policy , players will not face the possibility of being suspended from games over positive tests for any drug — not just marijuana .

Study Explores Cannabis Effect on Migraines
Researchers have started what is America ’ s first double-blind , randomized , placebocontrolled study examining the effect of cannabis products on severe migraine symptoms . Trials at the University of California San Diego ( UCSD ) School of Medicine began with 20 participants who suffer from frequent migraines , though they anticipate to increase the sample size by an additional 70 volunteers . “ Many patients who suffer from migraines have experienced them for many years , but have never discussed them with their physicians . They are , rather , self-treating with various treatments , such as cannabis ,” says UCSD neurologist and headache specialist Nathaniel Schuster . Participants are grouped into four random categories : the first received placebo vape pens , the second was administered cannabis flower with THC ; another received cannabis with CBD ; and the last group was given a cannabis vape pen with both THC and CBD . Researchers will test the effect of each group ’ s treatment against frequent migraine symptoms including nausea , vomiting , sensitivity to light and sound , and headache pain over the short and long term .
