More Research Needed on Cannabis Efficacy
Despite medical cannabis being legal in Canada for 20 years , cannabis researcher James MacKillop says not enough is known about the efficacy or safety of the products available . That ’ s after a McMaster University ( MU ) study shows some doctors in Ontario are still unsure if cannabis hurts or helps patients . “ There ’ s not a lot of guidance from either physicians or so-called cannabis professionals because there isn ’ t good evidence to base that on ,” says MacKillop , director of the Michael G . DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research at MU . MacKillop was one of 200 scientists and clinicians who signed an open letter asking Health Canada to remove barriers to that kind of research . “ There is an urgent need for randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness and safety of the numerous medical cannabis products currently available to patients in Canada ,” the letter says . In Canada , cannabis products are made to safety standards akin to food or agricultural products , but not to the same standard as pharmaceuticals .

More Dogs Getting Sick from Weed
More dogs are getting sick from accidentally consuming pot products containing THC , suggests a study out of the University of Guelph . Researchers say the number of incidents involving cannabis poisoning in dogs has risen due to its increasing popularity and legalization in North America . Researchers used data based on U . S . numbers and noted “ dogs are not very discriminating in what they eat and are known to snatch food from kitchen counters and bedside tables as well as eat things off the floor or ground ,” says Mohammad Howard-Azzeh , the study ’ s lead author . Researchers examined the nature of calls that came in between 2009 and 2014 to the Animal Poison Control Center of American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals . More specifically , they examined factors between cannabis and non-cannabisrelated calls . The data showed a significant increase in reports of cannabis poisoning in dogs in areas where cannabis was legalized as dogs could access a wide variety of edibles .

Poll : Atheists More Likely to Back Weed Legalization
Religious people are much less likely to support legalizing marijuana compared to those who identify as atheists and other religiously unaffiliated groups , a new polling analysis from the Pew Research Center found . While most cannabis surveys look at key demographics like political party affiliation , age , and race , this latest report reveals a prominent schism between people of various Christian faiths and those who are atheist , agnostic or “ nothing in particular .” Overall , 60 percent of Americans favor legalizing cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes , based on Pew ’ s latest national survey . Religiously affiliated people are less inclined to back fully ending prohibition , though still with a majority of 54 percent . The group least likely to favor adult-use legalization is white evangelical Protestants ( 44 percent ) and the most likely supporters are black Protestants ( 63 percent ). In contrast , 76 percent of religiously unaffiliated people support legalizing both recreational and medical marijuana .
