Cannabis Packaging Hurting Environment
While there is much to love about legal weed in Canada , there is no question there is room for improvement . Perhaps one of the most obvious and overlooked aspects is one to which many suppliers contribute , but few have made genuine strides to mitigate : the millions of pounds of plastic packaging . In the early days of legalization , solid black plastic packaging dominated the market , with many brands opting to package their product in sleek-looking but unrecyclable containers . These jars are widely used and decompose slowly over decades , pumping toxins into the soil and eventually making their way to the nearest ocean . The exact scope of the recreational market ’ s plastic waste problem is hard to quantify , but the impact has been decidedly negative . The environmental company [ Re ] Waste estimated that between 12.7-14.1 million pounds of plastic from cannabis packaging ended up in landfills between October 2018 and August 2019 . And a CBC report found that for each gram of legal cannabis sold , up to 70 grams of plastic waste was generated .

Cannabis Tourism Taking Off
Legal cannabis consumption rose in the U . S . and Europe during the COVID pandemic , with some people turning to marijuana to help them cope with lockdowns and broken routines . Also , fewer people today view the drug as harmful compared to previous decades . These factors may have contributed to a trend towards cannabis-related tourism , with destinations developing new holiday products to tempt customers , and rising travel bookings to destinations where cannabis is legal . Research by MMGY Travel Intelligence found 29 percent of leisure travelers are interested in cannabis-related tourism . A study by the Dutch government revealed 58 percent of international tourists choose Amsterdam and business in Dutch coffee shops has increased since the start of the pandemic . Nine months after Illinois legalized recreational cannabis in January 2020 , nearly 30 percent of cannabis purchases were by non-residents . Thailand has recently announced it has legalized cannabis and is hoping this will boost tourism .

Stronger Cannabis Can Lead to Addiction
Higher concentrations of THC are causing more people to become addicted , a review of studies found . Compared with people who use lower-potency products ( 5-10 milligrams per gram of THC ), those who use higher-potency cannabis are more likely to experience addiction and mental health outcomes , according to the study published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry . Scientists have established a “ standard unit ” of 5mg of THC for research . That amount is said to produce a mild intoxication for nonregular users . “ One of the highest-quality studies included in our publication found that use of high-potency cannabis , compared to low-potency cannabis , was linked to a four-fold increased risk of addiction ,” says study co-author Tom Freeman , director of the addiction and mental health group at the University of Bath . In the U . S ., about three in 10 people who use marijuana have cannabis use disorder , the medical term for marijuana addiction , according to the U . S . Centers for Disease and Prevention .
