Back in the 1930s when Harry J . Anslinger unleashed his plan to create a new moral demon , he came armed to the teeth with the tools of a clever propagandist . Fear has always been a potent tactic for politicians and tyrants , and Anslinger made full use of the media of the time to cast fear into the heart of white America . He used every method at his disposal to warn the citizenry that a foreign menace called marijuana was turning Mexican migrants and blacks into salacious predators and murderous beasts . People were led to believe that cannabis would make women into insatiable nymphomaniacs , young men into mass murders , and visible minorities into marauding barbarians . Exploiting mortal , moral , and racist fears , Anslinger was , over several years and with the funding of the US government , able to convince the public to pressure their state governments into banning one of the most common and useful natural resources in history , one with a strong foundation in American colonialism . Anslinger ’ s Marijuana Tax Act opened the door to what has become almost a century of drug prohibition and social conditioning . During the decades of prohibition , intelligent citizens were fed every conceivable falsehood about cannabis . Of course , as the war on drugs was established , it soon appeared to be more and more profitable , just like any war . But what became understood over time was that a war with no end is the most profitable of all .

Still , over the years , the claims of the propagandists soon grew more questionable . It has been said that while Anslinger was working ardently to establish more stringent penalties with the passing of the Boggs Act of 1951 and the Narcotics Control Act of 1956 , and while working for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics , his claims about cannabis were so overthe-top that youth came to view them as absurd . In my lifetime , I have heard laughable claims like marijuana will make men grow breasts or make people unmotivated losers because pot will turn their brains into scrambled eggs . Many of these claims have come to be exposed for the lies that they are . Yet as their veneer of deception wears thinner by the day , the prohibitionists ’ assertion that cannabis is a gateway drug that leads users into a life of harder drug consumption never seems to lose its appeal with staunch right-wing moralists who continue to work assiduously to keep the drug war alive . While the National Institute on Drug Abuse has long professed that marijuana leads to heavier drug use , the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences has publicly stated as far back as almost 20 years that “ there is no conclusive evidence that the drug effects of marijuana are causally linked to the subsequent abuse of other illicit drugs .” Usually , the negative claims are based on correlation instead of cause , and they don ’ t hold up under scrutiny . For a person who becomes familiar with cannabis or friends with those that use it , the claims don ’ t hold up either . What the drug war has spawned is a complex empire of corruption that occupies both sides of the law . In addition to this , it has split the populace into two distinct groups — those that completely buy into the fear perpetuated by drug war prohibitionists and those who don ’ t . What is most incredible is that in the face of such a massive institutionalized force , anti-prohibitionists , medical marijuana activists , human rights advocates , and the pro-cannabis movement have moved mountains to expose the truth . Keep in mind that prohibitionists and policy makers have done their best to make sure that no scientific research can be legally conducted on cannabis , especially if the research shines a positive light on the herb .
