Cloning is the type of horticultural reproduction most commonly utilized in the cannabis growing industry . Cloning is an asexual form of propagation and as such has both strengths and weaknesses . The strengths of cloning include : ideal characteristic reproduction ( including female gender ), consistency of results , and reliability of the grow . Cloning ’ s benefits also include ease ( does not require extensive skill or experience ) and low cost . Cloning ’ s weaknesses include : sensitivity of new clones , weaker root systems , smaller per-plant yields , and the low genetic diversity that can result in an entire grow more susceptible to pathogens . Taking cuttings from a mother plant to grow roots and therein create exact genetic clones has established itself as the most reputable form of asexual propagation amongst cannabis growers . It produces crops faster than growing from seed and with the known characteristics of the final product . However , another form of producing clones called tissue culture is on the rise and gaining in popularity .
