How much is too much ? Over the past 10 or so years , the concentration of THC , cannabis ’ s psychoactive ingredient , has more than doubled from a manageable 15 or so percent to a mind-blowing 30 percent in some cases . As far as cannabis consumers are concerned , the higher the THC amount the better . Most ignore other features of flower such as terpenes , and the industry isn ’ t doing much to change that . Potency has become the standard , the measuring stick for comparisons . This , of course , is leading to problems . A recent report linked high-potency cannabis to an increased risk of psychosis and cannabis use disorder ( CUD ). In the U . S . and Canada , federal research shows that three in 10 marijuana users have some kind of CUD , largely due to using high-potency cannabis products . Those same studies also revealed that high-potency users were five times more likely to be diagnosed with a psychotic disorder , and those who use low-dose cannabis products were not associated with any kind of psychotic disorder or CUD . Years ago , the proponents of legal cannabis lobbied on the grounds that cannabis is harmless . It wasn ’ t addictive , people didn ’ t get sick from it , and it had healing potential . It ’ s just a natural plant , they argued . And it worked . But now ? Because of high THC people are getting sick , their mental health is suffering , and genetic engineering has gone beyond natural . These factors are exactly what political opponents to cannabis feared , and they are a roadblock to cannabis becoming legal in conservative jurisdictions .

Like any controlled substance , cannabis is a case where consumers need to be better educated on what they are purchasing and putting into their bodies , and the industry needs to rein in THC levels and focus on the complete profile of the flower .
