HYBRID
A cannabis hybrid is the result of crossbreeding indica , sativa , and / or ruderalis cannabis types with the goal of producing a strain containing specifically targeted attributes of each parent plant . Hybrid cannabis strains therefore contain the combined characteristics of the sativa , indica , or ruderalis parent plants . These hybrids can then be crossbred to create further hybrid strains .
Each cannabis type and strain contains a different concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes . By crossbreeding cannabis types , these commercially valuable components can be enhanced and refined . Each strain and each resulting hybrid can therefore cause a specific experience for the user due to the unique chemical makeup of each cannabis strain and the entourage effect that results . As well , the physical growing characteristics and structures of the plant can be bred for specific traits such as size , hardiness , flowering time , and cultivation method .
In addition , terpene and flavour profiles have become more valuable commercial components and are also key targets in developing hybrid strains .
As the chemical makeup of a given strain becomes more important to the consumer than the type of parent plant , the terms “ sativa ” and “ indica ” are becoming less relevant . Most commercial cannabis is derived from hybrid strains .
