I
t’s never a bad time to brush
up on a few biology basics.
As we’ve covered in recent
issues with topics like methyl
jasmonate (Maximum Yield,
January/February 2018),
plant biology is amazing.
In this issue of Maximum
Yield, we explore the process
of how plants breathe (Story
of Stomata on page 46) and
tissue culture on page 38. Knowing
how your plants function will
help you make better decisions
when providing for them, whether
your garden is indoors or outdoors.
Understanding plant biology will also help
when considering more advanced procedures,
like propagation through cuttings (page 58), or
why some lights are more effective in certain
situations than others (page 50).
Of course, the entire reason we grow our own
food is to have a closer connection to it, and to
produce healthier and tastier produce than what
the global supply chain can offer. In Monica
Mansfield’s cover story Volcanic Power on page 28,
she provides a few ideas on why using volcanic
basalt powder can really add to your food by
boosting your soil’s mineral content.
For more tips and ideas, check out our Max Facts
section starting on page 16, and our Good to Grow
section on page 20 will point you in the right
direction for all the grow gear you need to get your
garden off to a good start.
