The time spent in the garden over the summer really is the real magic. Anticipation, learning, and even some worries all crescendo into the imminent harvest. from the EDITOR TG Toby Gorman Throughout the summer of COVID-19 in the Northern Hemisphere, gardening served as one of the top activities for people. It provided an opportunity to get outside, get some fresh air, be active, and focus on a task that would result in healthy rewards and benefits. Now, it’s Australia and New Zealand’s time to get back to the garden. As COVID lingers and prevents us from participating in the many activities that allow us to interact, gardening will play an important role in keeping many people active, outside, focused, and connected in the months ahead. As stated in Alan Ray’s article “The Healing Power of Gardens” on page 34, gardens can provide an ample amount of both physical and mental health. “While working in a garden, secret rewards are slowly revealed to us between the sewing and the reaping, two acts that simply designate a beginning and an end. The time spent between those events is where another magic happens,” writes Ray. Now is a good time to revisit that neglected patch of garden in your yard. Start by pulling some weeds, then planting herbs, fruits, or vegetables that will do well in your zone. There are many online resources to guide you, or visit your local garden shop. The time spent in the garden over the summer really is the real magic. Anticipation, learning, and even some worries all crescendo into the imminent harvest. Hopefully by then, COVID will have passed and the world can focus on moving forward in a way more in tune with nature. 12 Maximum Yield
