Being in the ocean was a defining part of my upbringing in a small fishing community in the North East.

While many of my neighbours went to sea to make a living the ocean was always more of a playground for me and from the age of 5 I was brought up windsurfing, surfing and sailing.

Whatever it was I was doing it was always pretty clear that, given the opportunity, I’d be in the ocean. I always had a deep love and rampant enthusiasm for any water based activity but when, in my late teens, I discovered kitesurfing I knew I’d found my ‘thing’. I couldn’t have known then the path this would take me down and the places I’ve been able to visit during my time kitesurfing have made me all the more thankful to be a part of this fantastic sport.

While I’ve spent long stretches of time travelling it was my return to the UK that has really helped me to find my true direction in the sport and the rewards I feel I’ve gained from exploring my own country’s (admittedly very cold) coastline have shown me that you can explore and further your riding closer to home than you think and that memorable travel experiences and adventure are there to be found without lengthy time spent travelling and without the environmental impact that global travel has.
