The first open-access handbook to comprehensively survey developments in living culture since the 2003 UNESCO Convention on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage, this freely available volume draws on an expanded concept of culture embraced by more than 180 countries— one that foregrounds the Global South’ s pivotal role in advancing awareness of intangible cultural practices worldwide. The handbook unfolds across five parts. It opens by mapping the relationship between the 1972 World Heritage Convention and its 2003 counterpart, before turning to colonialism, minority rights, and inequality— with perspectives from Nigeria, Brazil, and the US. Subsequent sections examine how intangible heritage practices build meaning, community, and identity through bottom-up participation; explore aesthetics across music, dance, architecture, theater, and museum practice; and address emerging challenges including digital and post-digital culture and new forms of community building.
