WHY THE MENA REGION CANNOT WAIT For the Middle East and North Africa( MENA) region, the introduction of Memory Twin technologies is particularly timely and impactful. The region is home to some of the world’ s richest and most diverse cultural heritage, spanning millennia of human civilization. From ancient cities and archaeological sites to Islamic architecture and living traditions, MENA’ s heritage is both invaluable and vulnerable. Armed conflicts, climate change, rapid urbanization, and insufficient resources have posed significant threats to the preservation and management of this heritage.
In this context, the Memory Twin offers a powerful tool for safeguarding cultural assets. By creating accurate and detailed digital representations, it ensures that even in cases of damage or destruction, a comprehensive record remains available for restoration, research, and education. This is particularly crucial in regions affected by conflict, where heritage sites have been systematically targeted or inadvertently damaged. A Memory Twin can serve as a digital safeguard— a“ backup” of cultural memory that transcends physical vulnerabilities.
A NEW TOOL FOR MUSEUM PROFESSIONALS Beyond preservation, the Memory Twin enhances the management and operation of museums and heritage sites across the MENA region. Museums can leverage Memory Twins to create interconnected digital ecosystems, where collections are not only catalogued but contextualized within broader historical and cultural narratives. Curators and researchers gain access to integrated datasets that support advanced analysis, provenance tracking, and conservation planning. For site managers and monument owners, Memory Twins provide real-time monitoring capabilities, enabling proactive maintenance and risk assessment based on environmental conditions or structural changes.

Memory Twins can enhance tourism strategies by providing hybrid experiences that blend physical visits with digital interactions. They enable pre-visit exploration, on-site augmentation, and post-visit engagement, thereby extending the visitor journey and increasing cultural value. At the same time, they offer alternatives in situations where physical access is limited, ensuring continuity in cultural dissemination and revenue generation.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE These are not hypothetical applications. Three recent projects demonstrate what the Memory Twin can achieve when implemented rigorously— and what the MENA region can learn from them.
The eLambousa( Lambousa Trawler) stands as a key example of how a Memory Twin can be effectively realized in the domain of digital cultural heritage. By systematically harvesting, aggregating, and structuring heterogeneous data- ranging from archival records and scholarly documentation to 3D models and multimedia content- the platform creates a dynamic, evolving digital counterpart of the only existing fishing boat Lambousa in the Panhellenic area. This Memory Twin not only preserves the object’ s tangible and intangible heritage in high fidelity, but also enables continuous enrichment, interoperability with European infrastructures such as Europeana, and active engagement by researchers, cultural institutions, and the public.
The platform eFikardou represents a flagship, state-of-the-art implementation of the Memory Twin concept, capturing the unique cultural, architectural, and social fabric of the medieval Cypriot village of Fikardou— inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Through the seamless integration of highresolution 3D documentation, archival records, oral histories, and scholarly research, the platform establishes a dynamic and continuously evolving digital counterpart of the village. This Memory Twin not only safeguards the authenticity and integrity of Fikardou’ s heritage but also enables advanced analysis, longterm preservation, and immersive public engagement.
By aligning with leading European digital heritage frameworks, including Europeana, eFikardou and eLambousa exemplifies how digital innovation can transform a historic settlement into a living, interoperable knowledge ecosystem— supporting sustainable conservation, fostering international visibility, and reinforcing the role of cultural heritage as a driver for education, research, and community resilience.
At the Malta Maritime Museum, a Memory Twin was developed around the former Malta Drydocks— one of the island’ s most significant industrial and social heritage sites. The project digitized over 8,000 artifacts using 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry. But what transformed it from a digital archive into a Memory Twin was the oral history program: more than 200 hours of testimony recorded from over 130 former dockyard workers, carefully indexed and integrated into Heritage Malta’ s collections management infrastructure, and published on Europeana for global access.
