The idea that my brain can take in a comprehensive story of a thousand years in two hours. No.” He much prefers focused, manageable narratives: institutions that know what they are and commit to it.
The deeper critique is structural. Arts and cultural institutions in the Arab world, he observes, still tend toward elitism— a register of language and presentation that signals, consciously or not, that this space is not for everyone.“ There is a currency associated with pushing people out,” he says.“ There is a cachet in exclusion.” The cost is a public that feels alien in spaces that are, theoretically, built for them.
His solution draws on the same architecture he admires in dance communities: beginners enter at a level that meets them where they are, earn confidence through regular engagement, and gradually access more complex material— not because they have been credentialed, but because they have shown up.“ You don’ t have an MFA. You don’ t have a PhD. But you’ ve been coming every single week for two years. Now sit in on the master class.”
A MOVEMENT, NOT A MONUMENT What distinguishes AFIKRA from institutions— and perhaps what Arab cultural life most needs right now— is that it was never designed to preserve. It was designed to activate. The library it is building, the journal it is publishing, the chapters it is planting across 30 cities are not monuments to what Arab culture was. They are platforms for what it is becoming— through the questions being asked this week in Brooklyn, Beirut, Dubai, and Riyadh by people who grew up being told the answers.
AFIKRA | ةركفع, come to think of it. The name is an invitation. The movement is the proof that when you accept it, the Arab world reveals itself as infinitely more vast, more layered, and more alive than any official version ever allowed.
