Caretaker to Storyteller

OW IS A CURATOR transformed from a caretaker to a storyteller, and what is the role of a curator today? As the purpose of creating art has evolved from mere representation to active reflection of social, political, and environmental concerns, so too has the role of the curator. Where once curators primarily preserved and displayed collections, today ' s curators craft narratives that connect artists, artworks, and audiences in meaningful dialogue.
THE CURATOR AS CREATIVE ARCHITECT
With creative vision, curators design the framework of an exhibition and define the artistic dialogue around it. This expansive role encompasses proposing themes, selecting artists and artworks, developing public programs, coordinating with media, writing critical texts, supervising installation logistics, and fostering audience engagement.
= At the heart of contemporary curatorial practice lies extensive research. Driven by curiosity and innovation, my approach involves investigating multiple sources and filtering vast amounts of information to identify the threads of a meaningful story. This continuous learning process informs the unique conceptual framework of each exhibition.
CASE STUDY: CRAFTING NARRATIVE THROUGH SPACE
States of Light, Reem Al Faisal ' s exhibition at L ' Art Pur Foundation in Riyadh, demonstrates how curatorial research translates into spatial storytelling. The show explored the layers of history surrounding the religious act of pilgrimage and the artist ' s quest to capture the sublime. Al Faisal ' s artistic journey paralleled the spiritual journey of pilgrims, beginning at the Islamic Port of Jeddah— the gateway to the Kingdom ' s holy sites. I paired Al Faisal ' s photographs with her own written reflections, creating a unified narrative body.
The installation followed a deliberate progression that traced the artist ' s path and that of her subjects: from Jeddah ' s port and souks through the sacred rituals of Mecca and Medina. Moving through L ' Art Pur Foundation ' s expansive halls, visitors experienced this spiritual journey firsthand.
